Dear Renee,

What’s the best place to take metal – Cans, Aluminum, Iron. (As in-who pays the best price and is not crooked)?

THANKS!
Vivian

Dear Vivian,

When I was a kid, I got to collect all of the cans in our household, take them to the recycling center, and keep the coin. Literally, I think I made anywhere between $.60 and $2 at a time.

Nowadays you can take your scrap metal to Omnisource. There are five locations in Indianapolis and 30+ throughout the state. They’ll take everything from aluminum cans to broken appliances to old strand lights … even cars!

When I talked with Omnisource at the end of August, their Keystone scrap yard was paying $.47/lb for aluminum. It changes daily, and the prices vary by scrap yard, so call 317-381-5800 for numbers when you have a bag ‘o cans for recycling.

If you have some cans, but you don’t need the spare change, meet The Can Lady. I first met Mary when she stopped to pick up a can near my house. I thanked her for keeping my ‘hood clean and she told me about her mission. She collects cans all around town, one or 100 at a time. Then she cashes them in and donates her earnings to local school programs. If you have cans for The Can Lady, connect with her on Facebook!

Piece out,

Renee

i took in 10 bags of cans, had to take out of bags and dump in shopping carts, then when I got up there was told I had to go back out and seperate all the cat food cans out and put in seperate shopping carts.Which was first in 8 years of recycling.Rules keep changing,Places keep going out of business. It makes doing the right thing harder and harder.
