Renee,
I am a Benedictine sister from Our Lady of Grace Monastery in Beech Grove. We are looking for a person to work with our community to reduce our utilities and other energy consuming costs. I have looked at energy auditors, which would be one option. Do you have any recommendations?
Thanks for your help.
Sr. Sheila
Hi Sister Sheila,
Conserving energy makes you a good steward of your finances and the Earth. There are several options for learning about how to reduce your energy consumption.
First, I recommend that you look into Energizing Indiana,a collaboration of statewide utilities and other organizations offering energy efficiency programs. They offer programs for homes, schools, businesses and commercial facilities throughout the
state. It’s a powerful resource (Get it? Power-ful) that can help conserve energy and save money on energy costs.
If you’re looking to connect with a company that provides energy audits, I suggest looking at reviews on a service like Angie’s List.
Recently I had a Residential Home Energy Assessment done by Energizing Indiana. The consultant helped me replace some light bulbs, measured the flow of my faucets, assessed the HVAC, and inspected insulation levels. The result was a comprehensive report with helpful recommendations, like weather stripping the attic access and adding insulation in the basement.
I’ve also had a home energy audit that included a very thorough assessment of my home with tools like a blower door. It was fascinating to learn my Home Energy Rating System (HERS) rating, as well as info like air infiltration and duct leakage. It was also helpful to get a list of recommendations, specifications and suggested contractors for the resulting punch list.
Your sister in living green,
Renee
