Some of the bicycle-friendly lovin' folks of Freewheelin' Community Bikes.

If you had any doubts on the progress of a ‘bicycle-friendly Indiana,’ Bicycle Indiana has some encouraging news — Indianapolis and three Hoosier businesses have stepped up the game on creating a bike-friendly state.

The City of Indianapolis has earned a bronze award as a Bicycle Friendly Community from The League of American Bicyclists. Outpost Sports in Mishawaka, and GTA Containers also earned bronze awards as a Bicycle-Friendly Business while South Bend’s Memorial Hospital received an honorable mention.

In a press release, Nancy Tibbett, executive director of Bicycle Indiana, said out of the 67 entities named ‘bicycle-friendly’ in 2012, four of them are in Indiana.

“Being named a bicycle-friendly community or employer allows you to say ‘We’re progressive and we care about health, fitness, the environment and livable communities,’” added Tibbett. “We’re excited to see that trend and momentum grow.”

In addition to advocacy for laws, policy and infrastructure change, Bicycle Indiana promotes safety, and education through statewide seminars with the Indiana State Department of Health and other projects.

We would love for the biking community to join
us for Bike Safety Day on Saturday, May 19th at Creekside Middle
School in Carmel from 10-4:20! The event is open to the public, no registration
is necessary and will offer helmet and tire checks, safety practice courses and
free giveaways, including a T-shirt for all child participants. We are also
accepting gently used bike donations for Bikes4kids.
