Unless you’ve been living under a paint can in the garage, you know that certain household waste belongs at a ToxDrop instead of the trash.

Now you have one more option for disposing of items like antifreeze, brake fluid, batteries, drain cleaners, fluorescent light bulbs, glue and adhesives, paints, paint thinner, pesticides, pool chemicals, household thermometers, toilet bowl cleaners, used motor oil, and gasoline.

The newest ToxDrop location is 1725 S. West St., Building #1, any Tuesday or Thursday from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m. to dispose of hazardous household waste. Other ToxDrop locations are:

  • 7550 North Lafayette Road, 1st and 3rd Saturday of each month, 9am to 2pm
  • 9049 East 10th Street, 1st and 3rd Saturday of each month from 9am to 2pm
  • 4925 South Shelby Street, 2nd and 4th Saturday of each month from 9 am to 2pm

Thanks to The Toxic Crusaders of Indianapolis DPW, more than 1 million lbs. of household hazardous waste has been diverted from our sewers, waterways and landfills annually.

Piece out,
Renee

    Hi Renee,
Do these facilities really take household batteries?  I recently took a box to the Hamilton Co hazardous waste drop and was told these are now considered regular household waste and should be thrown in the trash.  I read that California is the only state that is regulating disposal of regular batteries.  I called Recycle Force and they are still accepting the batteries, however have 2 ton of batteries sitting at their facility, trying to find a place to recycle them (he has a place in Michigan that will charge him 4.5 cents per pound).  I have a band that uses a lot of batteries and I have been trying to recycle them (re-chargeable just won’t work for us – we’ve tried)

I was told the mercury that used to be in the batteries has been removed in newer batteries which is why they are now considered general household waste / trash.

Also, heard a rumor that the big 4 battery companies are going to start a recycling program in 2013.
