What is used car dealer’s favorite element? Selenium

Selenium is a man made as well as a naturally occurring chemical. It is naturally occurring in different types of rocks and soil. Selenium comes from the burning of oils, coal, and industrial waste.

Most exposure to selenium comes from the ingestion of food. When living near plants that are using selenium there is a higher level of selenium within the air. Also, when a plant disposes of its industrial waste there could become contamination within the nearby water.

There are beneficial and harmful effects when an individual is exposed to selenium. Low level exposure is needed for an individual to maintain healthy. High level oral exposure can cause nausea, vomiting, and selenosis.  High level inhalation exposure can cause irritation, and coughing. The International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) has not classified selenium as a human carcinogen.
