Reasons to Eat Local
Food travels on average 1,500 miles from farm to plate. Besides the cost in cash and carbon emissions, there are other reasons to buy local.
Local produce is fresher / healthier Produce loses nutrients quickly. Locally grown food bought soon after harvest means peak flavor and nutrition. No lengthy cold storage or wax coating.
Local food benefits the local economy Money spent locally is not sent through a middle man to a distant mega-corp. It’s a win for the farmer, the consumer and the community.
Local food is about food security By supporting local farmers, availability of fresh abundant food is guaranteed. If global food corporations fail, local access will be secure.
Local food is seasonal By eating in season, we enjoy food at its peak taste, most abundant, and least expensive.
Local food protects open space, and a clean environment A well-managed family farm is a place where fertile soil and clean water are valued. When a farm prospers, it will not be sold for development.
