Pthanks for the Phthalates!

Phthalates are man made chemicals that are used in plastic products. They are used to increase the flexibility of the plastic goods. Pesticides and cosmetics also use phthalates. There is a high probability of phthalates separating from other chemicals due to it lacks the original structure of the products it is bonded to.

Landfills that have plastic products that contain phthalates can leach into the soil. Aquatic life can also accumulate phthalates. Exposure can occur through contaminated air. Eating food from a container with phthalates can cause exposure. Lastly, eating aquatic life can pose an exposure.

The health effects of phthalates are not well known. There have been studies that have shown negative effects upon rats but not extremely detrimental. Studies upon humans have not been conducted yet. It is thought that phthalates increase diabetes by inhibiting insulin.
