RecycleForce, the socially progressive recycling organization that trains previously incarcerated individuals for the workforce, has just received the Responsible Recycling (R2) Standard. This makes RecycleForce the first not-for-profit organization in the Midwest to receive R2 certification.
The R2 Standard is a certification presented to organizations that meet certain criteria in regards to their recycling of electronics. These criteria emphasize the impact an organization’s recycling takes on the environment, the health and safety of the public, and the security of the data contained on the electronics.
“Since the creation of RecycleForce in 2006, we have been committed to responsible recycling practices,” said RecycleForce president Gregg Keesling. “The R2 Standard confirms our commitment and attests to our responsible recycling operations and management throughout the entire process and chain of custody of materials from beginning to end.”
In addition to the R2 Standard there is also the e-Stewards Standard that also focuses on low environmental impact, health and safety, and data security in electronics recycling. The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) encourages electronic recycling organizations to obtain either of these verifications through an independent, third party auditor.
The benefits of responsible electronics recycling includes: reducing environmental and health hazards from improper disposal, increasing access to quality reusable materials, and reducing energy consumption and the environmental hazards associated with the mining of new materials.
RecycleForce’s new certification also has the added benefit of helping out partner organizations like the City of Indianapolis Tox Drop program.
“Tox Drop is committed to diverting household hazardous waste and electronics from our city’s landfills and waterways,” said Nate Self, environmental resource manager for the Department of Public Works. “With partners like Recycle Force we know those materials are being disposed of with the utmost care and responsibility and can take pride in supporting this non-for-profit.”
RecycleForce is now the sixth R2-certified recycler in Indiana and the fourth in Indianapolis.
RecycleForce, a 501(c)3 organization, is a social enterprise offering comprehensive and innovative recycling services while providing life-changing workforce training to formerly incarcerated individuals. Taking the electronic waste and other recyclables provided by residents and corporate partners, RecycleForce deconstructs these items, recycles the materials and disposes of the waste safely and cleanly. The scrap metals and other reusable materials collected in this process are then sold to help pay for job training programs and employment opportunities for formerly incarcerated men and women in order to support their re-entry back into society.
