Maybe it’s because I’m getting out and about with the slideshow, but I’ve been feeling upbeat lately — despite the complete lack of attention paid to climate change on the second presidential debate. Good news keeps rolling in: Global investments in renewables outdistance investments in fossil fuels. Department of Energy’s investments in clean energy are paying off. More people starting to get it about climate change.

But then something happens. Like the other day when I was at a theater event and stopped by the concession stand for a bite.

The gals behind the counter were out of a lot of their food, which was good for the theater, I’m sure. But I was hungry. What could get me through the second act?

I spotted a seldom-consumed, but old favorite: Twizzlers.

So I asked for a Twizzler and the woman behind the counter asked me how many? and I responded what do you mean? and she placed an individually wrapped Twizzler on the counter in front of me.

That’s right. A single Twizzler. Wrapped in plastic.

I declined to purchase anything and walked away.

My goodness, I thought, we don’t deserve this planet.
