Chromium is naturally occurring in animals, soil, vegetation, and minerals.  It is also man made and used within different manufacturing products. It is not readily broken down into the environment. It changes form by binding to other compounds.

Exposure to chromium mainly comes from the ingestion of foodstuffs. It also can occur through drinking water contaminated with chromium. The last way of exposure is living near a manufacturing plant that releases chromium into the air and the individual breathes in the contaminated air.

Chromium has been classified as a human carcinogen by the Environmental Protection Agency. When exposed to chromium an individual can experience irritation of the nose, breathing problems, and skin sores. It also can have damaging effects upon the male reproductive system.
