drainAt a friend’s family summer home on Lake Maxinkuckee near Culver, a sign in the bathroom issued the most rudimentary of water conservation efforts: “If it’s yellow let it mellow and …” well, you know the rest. When you’re only a few steps away from the second-largest lake in Indiana, it can be difficult to grasp the need to conserve water.

Plus, when the various pipes in our homes release a flow of H20 on demand, it’s easy to forget that water is a precious resource. It’s even easier to forget that it doesn’t flow without an energy source.

Meridian St. “Now, we’re down to maybe three, and one of those is closing soon.”

Budget Fixes for Cold-Weather Energy SavingsWe Hoosiers gobble up energy at a prodigious rate, ranking us the 10th-highest per capita consumer of energy among the 50 states, according to EnergyTrends.org, a website that tracks energy consumption and is funded by the Lexington Institute. Don Soifer, executive vice president of the institute, says, “Residential use of coal was a big part of the picture in Indiana.” He notes that we don’t yet use a lot of renewable fuels, such as solar and wind. That, though, squares with much of the country.
