Are Air Wick plug ins recyclable?

I am hooked on the Air Wick plug ins to keep my house smelling fresh. I have been reusing the part that actually plugs into the wall, of course, but I do think some have run their course in life. Are these destined for Recycle Force or is there somewhere else that I should be sending these?

Inquiring “wannabe green” minds want to know!

Dear Wannabe,

You know what I’m thinking. Plug in air fresheners use chemicals, electricity, plastic … ew. But if you must, I have a few ideas for you. If you’re looking to get rid of the actual plug in contraption, I’m thinking an electronics recycler is your best bet. However, if you’re looking to rid yourself of the cartridges, have I got a DIY project for you.

Instead of spending 5 bucks for two chemical-laden refills, how’s about using essential oils to refill the little container? I believe you could even cut the essential oil with a little olive, grapeseed or other non-odor oil so as not to use so much essential oil.

Check out this article on How to Refill Glade, Airwick, and Febreze Air Fresheners to Save Money. And you may even be able to replace old wicks to get even more life out of the containers.

Please read the Safety Hazards before trying this. You may also consider unplugging your freshener when you’re not at home in order to save electricity and extend the duration of the oils.

Piece out,
Imma Be
