I recycle. RecycleForce website.

Beginning in 1997, America Recycles Day is a nationwide event on Nov. 15 that encourages communities to come together to focus on ways to make recycling more prominent and effective in their areas. But this year, RecycleForce has decided to give the annual recycling day an Indy twist. Coordinating an event called the RecycleIndy Challenge, RecycleForce is hosting recycling events across the city designed to encourage Central Indiana residents to bring in their recyclables from Nov. 1 to Nov. 17. The challenge is to raise over 500,000 pounds in electronic recyclables. Examples of electronic recyclables include computers, copiers, fax machines, phone systems, toner cartridges, dehumidifiers, game stations, microwaves, and televisions. For a complete list of recyclable items, check out the RecycleForce website.

The RecycleIndy Challenge hopes to demonstrate to Central Indiana residents the impact recycling can have on both the environment and the economy. In addition to reducing carbon emissions and preventing the harvesting of new materials, recycling also offers an opportunity for job creations.

Beginning with a kick-off on Nov. 1, the first week of the RecycleIndy Challenge will focus on encouraging businesses and employees to bring in their old or unused electronics. The business or organization that collects the most electronics will be featured in Nuvo and honored at the RecycleIndy Challenge Celebration on Nov. 17. Interested participants can contact RecycleForce at info@recycleforce.org to learn more information and make collection arrangements for the electronics.

Following the week of collection from the businesses there will be three days of Rush Hour Recycling–an event in which commuters can load up their cars with old electronics and drop them off at one of several sites on their way to work in the morning. Each service site will be fully staffed so commuters can just pop their trunks and a staff member will assist them in unloading the vehicles. For a detailed list of drop-off locations please see the RecycleForce website.

All of these events will culminate in a RecycleIndy Challenge Celebration on Saturday Nov. 17 at City Market downtown. The winners of the business and employee recycle drive will be honored and there will be a musical performance by Mike Milligan & Steam Shovel. Hot cider and other fall treats will be available to munch on!
